Why sometimes a doctor can’t help you

You see your doctor, and he or she really wants to help you with your IBS. But at end of the day, the doctor can’t do much about it.

There may be lots of reasons for that, but two of the most important ones pointed out by Deepak Chopra (the leading expert in the field of integrative medicine) are:

  • The doctor doesn’t know what caused you to get sick.
  • There is no drug or surgery that will resolve the situation.
(From The Healing Self : Supercharge your immune system and stay well for life, p.20)

Treating symptoms not causes

Of course, Dr Chopra is talking about diseases in general, not particularly about IBS. However, I guess some of you (just like me) might have the experience of getting medications for treating the symptoms of diarrhoea or constipation after seeing a doctor.

One of my doctors is a very good one and he cares about me very much, but somehow he did not figure out how to cure my disease.

In a word, without knowing the causes doctors can only treat the symptom.

This is probably why for IBS people self-healing is a better approach, a way to deal with the causes.
